Step VII.
Reflecting on the CAC
- The group reflects on the experiences of or reactions
to the conference as a whole or to particular parts of it.
ebriefing provides a chance for all particpants to step back and look at the journey they have just taken together. It allows individuals to express how they experienced the protocol: What works for them? What concerns or issues came up? What might they do differently in future protocols? With debriefing it's important not to go back into looking at the student work, giving additional feedback, etc., but rather to reflect on the process of the protocol itself.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Facilitator: Now, the next piece is actually to step back and talk about the Collaborative Assessment Conference. What did you think about the protocol?
Participant: This is a good one to do as a first protocol in a sense that you don't know what the assignment was and yet you're looking at the work. It opens up so many areas that we as a group, if we were really a group that existed for years, this was an issue that I think we're ready to talk about. So I would use it as an initial one. It's just frustrating because I just wanted to know what the assignment was already.
Facilitator: You come to it with such open eyes when you don't have the context.
Participant: In the protocol, everything is time and it drives me crazy.
Participant: I know you time it, though, so it would flow.
Facilitator: But it's more timing. It takes more time because it will take at least an hour to do it. You can see it takes close to 75 minutes.
Participant: I liked it because as a participant I learned as much as Brenda did probably just hearing all the ideas from all the other people.
Participant: I liked it, too, because... Brenda did you ever feel picked on or defensive?
Brenda: No.
Participant: I thought this was very professional. I felt very professional doing this.
Participant: I did too.
Participant: And being respectful of one another. I really felt that there was mutual respect of all of us and the patience.
Participant: Can I point out that Brenda's question and her role as the person whose work was being looked at was wonderful, and you did a great job because you were really genuinely curious. I know in our critical friends groups, I think we end up asking questions they already know the answer to. But here I saw your mind going turn, turn, turn, turn....
